He stood erect and didn't bow
On this our VE day
A bead of sweat formed on his brow
And on his temples...grey
The medals pinned onto his chest
Were weighty to extreme
His honours proved he was the best
And everyone did gleam
Yet he had never been to war
And never had to fight
Had not been past his huge front door
Nor showed true guts or might
For he was royal was Charlie boy
And wore his gifts with pride
Protected by the hoi polloi
Who shed their guts and died
I hope that on our VE day
He shows a little heart
Respecting folk this day of May
Who actually took part
His glittering chest shall brighten not
Those valiant and brave
Whose lives shall never be forgot
"Oh Charlie please behave" !
